Rest in Peace (to the friends)

Rest in Peace to the friends

who set sail for the world

which lay outside my bubble,

to explore seas unfurled

Rest in Peace to the friends

whose hearts used to beat with mine

until they found that their own rythm

beat to a different time

Rest in Peace to the friends

who made me who I am

but found sweeter fields to graze

‘fore I grew to sheep from lamb

Rest in Peace to the friends

who once knew my every thought

yet if they met me now

every guess would yield nought

Rest in Peace to the friends

who drifted slowly away

and Rest in Peace to the friends

who exploded suddenly one day

Rest in Peace to the friends

who I miss and forgive

and Rest in Peace to the friends

I hope forgiveness they can give

Rest in Peace to the friends

who have headstones in my heart

while their lives carry on

no different from the start

Rest in Peace to the friends

who taught me more than could be asked;

their wisdom blesses fresh hearts now

but will forever last

Rest in Peace to the friends

who taught me to survive alone;

because of them I learned

how to be okay on my own

and Rest in Peace, my heart:

you ached so much when someone left

but your beat’s a stronger tempo now –

you’re better still for beating bereft.
